A 29-year-old Egyptian man from the United Arab Emirates attempted to attack soldiers at the Louvre Museum in France Friday morning. The man was in France on a visitors visa, reports indicate.
Police say the man shouted the Takbir (Islamic phrase “Allahu akbar” which means “God is great” in Arabic) while entering a shopping mall under the historic museum in the capital city. Police reported the attacker was shot 5 times before falling to the ground. The soldier only sustained ‘minor injuries’ during the incident.
Most of the 1,200 visitors were taken to more secure rooms in the museum as part of museum protocol. After a couple hours, the visitors were safely evacuated.
The attack comes amid high tensions in France, as their national election is just 3 months away and government officials and law enforcement are on high alert for potential terror attacks.
