Disobedient Media previously reported on death threats issued by Florida Democratic Party operative Evan Ross towards Edward Snowden and Julian Assange. Ross tweeted that he would be “happy to pull the trigger on both those two.” In response to his views being made public, Ross did not retract or even minimize his statements, but instead doubled down on them, telling local Miami press that he felt that such murderous intent towards political refugees was “patriotic.” After Democratic party insiders were reported to be considering filing a grievance against him, Ross issued a belated statement to the same outlet, retracting his sentiments.
Disobedient Media also reported on Evan Ross’s recent appearance at a local event with the controversial former DNC Chair, Debbie Wasserman Schultz. Geoff Campbell, known as Miami Gator on twitter, provided pictures to Disobedient Media which showed Schultz and Ross embracing at a local meeting on the proposed removal of confederate street signs. Campbell has been a long-time, outspoken progressive activist who volunteered for the Presidential campaigns of both Bernie Sanders and Jill Stein, and is currently an unpaid volunteer for Tim Canova in his run against Debbie Wasserman Schultz in Florida’s 23rd district.
Schultz’ public appearance comes as little surprise to many, as Schultz has appeared totally immune to shame in light of her increasingly bizarre defense of her former IT staffer, Imran Awan. Awan was arrested and charged with fraud recently during an attempt to flee the country for Pakistan. She was also named specifically in the recently dismissed DNC Fraud Lawsuit.
Their presence quickly drew the ire of local progressive activists, including Geoff Campbell, who has long held the view that both Ross and Schultz serve as emblems of the corruption plaguing the Democratic Party establishment.
Disobedient Media spoke to Geoff Campbell regarding his interactions with Ross. Ross served as President of the Miami Young Democrats from 2011 – 2013. Geoff explained to us that there had been a rift between Ross and other members of the Young Democrats, explaining that Ross had been removed but that afterwards he refused to return access to their social media accounts.
Campbell also spoke to Disobedient Media regarding what he viewed as unsavory activities of some DNC insiders, especially in Florida. Geoff told us that Ross has not only been involved with the death threats previously mentioned against Assange and Snowden, but had also been involved in local efforts to privatize water. As Campbell pointed out, Ross has consulted on behalf of CH2M, one of the companie associated with atrocious abuses in Flint, Michigan. .
Disobedient Media also became aware of an ethics violation complaint against Ross, which was also mentioned by the Miami New Times in its report on Ross’s wish to murder Julian Assange and Edward Snowden. .
Documentation of the dismissal of the ethics complaint against Ross describes a visit on behalf of city council members to a CH2M location, with Ross in attendance. The document states that, although Ethics Commission staff had deemed the complaint to be “legally sufficient,” it was dismissed after a closed hearing of the Commission. Water privatization efforts have proven to be a fiercely contested issue in Miami. Although CH2M won its bid, Ross was not employed by them by that time. Part of the complaint reads:
Ross’s apparent confidante, Debbie Wasserman Schultz, has made strong efforts on the part of ‘Big Sugar’ which has apparently resulted in large blue-green algae blooms nearby. Tim Canova referenced the issue in an ad campaign against Schultz. Local media reports that Canova is a law professor from Nova Southeastern University currently challenging Wasserman Schultz in Florida’s 23rd Congressional District. Campbell expressed his views on the matter via Twitter, claiming that the algae was caused by ‘Big Sugar’ runoff. Campbell is also an outspoken supporter of Tim Canova, who The Tampa Bay Times quoted on the matter of algae blooms:
“Wasserman Schultz’s response to the crisis is to divert attention and blame to others. She doesn’t want voters to see that she’s been taking lots of campaign contributions from the Big Sugar companies and other agribusinesses that have created this environmental crisis by polluting Lake Okeechobee with chemical fertilizers, particularly phosphorous and nitrates, and pesticides. Nor does she want us to know that she has voted for huge subsidies for the sugar industry and other agribusinesses, as well as for delays in cleanups, while failing to deliver federal funds for any real solution…”
That the blue-algae growths may be associated with corporate sponsors of Debbie Wasserman Schultz, in combination with Ross’ activities in support of water privatization, cast a sadly ironic image in light of the progressive efforts in the last two years to protect water integrity in locations including Standing Rock and Flint, Michigan.
Campbell told us that he had called Debbie Wasserman Schultz’ office to discuss the water privatization issue. Her office had not allowed him to speak with her, said that it would do nothing and that it had no comment. Since then, Campbell has heard nothing in response.
Campbell told Disobedient Media that he also sat across from Ross during a meeting with Keith Ellison during his bid for DNC chair. Geoff described Ross’s behavior during the meeting, which included repeatedly interrupting Ellison and berating his stance on Israel. Geoff told us that Ross effectively interrupted the entire meeting in order to talk solely about the Ellisons’s policy on Israel, which Ross claimed was not strong enough. At one point, Campbell told us, Ellison
actually had to pause to laugh at Ross’s blatantly inappropriate antics. Politico also noted: “Ellison’s backers say he’s the victim of a smear campaign and some privately say that, had he been a white Christian, he wouldn’t be so pilloried.”
The Intercept noted that Ellison lost the DNC Chair race after “a scorched-earth smear campaign targeting his religious faith, his affinity for the Nation of Islam in his youth, and his support for Palestinian rights alongside a secure Israel.” Geoff Campbell, who is himself Jewish, told us that he had strongly opposed Ross’s views on the matter both online via twitter and in person at the meeting with Ellison.
Considering the longstanding issues on the ground in the Democratic Party of Florida, it seems unsurprising that it is also the locale of the litigation of the DNC Fraud lawsuit. Debbie Wasserman Schultz’s willingness to literally and figuratively embrace Ross, who threatened to murder political refugees, while ignoring calls from local progressive activists attempting to protect the integrity of their water, indicates that the Democratic Party establishment, especially in Florida, has learned absolutely nothing from the events of the last year.
