Tensions between Spain and Catalonia are on the verge of a breaking point which cannot have a positive outcome for Spain, Catalans or the EU’s reputation. Spain plans to enforce Direct Rule over Catalan, beginning this Friday, while Catalonia’s Vice President has stated there is no choice but independence for Catalonia.
Earlier today, Catalonian President and leader of the independence movement, Carles Puigdemont, stated that an official move towards a declaration of Catalonian independence would be delayed.
In a scene that appeared to belong in a repressive dictatorship rather than in a Western member state of the EU, Spanish riot police violently attacked hundreds of peaceful Catalonian citizens attempting to vote this morning.
Disobedient Media previously reported on the suppression of the Catalan independence movement by Spanish authorities. Since that time, repressive tactics in Spain have increased and Disobedient Media was smeared by Spanish media outlet El Pais, along with Edward Snowden and Julian Assange.
Over the last few weeks, the Catalonian independence movement has provoked escalating and severe reactions from Spanish authorities, despite up to one million protestors taking to the streets of Barcelona. That a member state of the European Union would be able to treat its citizens in such a manner without consequence is deeply troubling.
